Alternative Version of the Assessment

An alternative version of the assessment has been created for students with special education needs, including students with a visual impairment or students with unique circumstances. This version contains single-select and open-response questions only.

The following formats of the alternative version are available:

  • A Unified English Braille (contracted or uncontracted) format of the assessment.
    • If a student requires a Braille format to complete the entire assessment, an e-mail to EQAO must be sent to info@eqao.com to request this format at least 7 days prior to administering the assessment.
  • A printable format (regular or large print) of the assessment for students who are unable to complete the assessment online. For this format, the student will be assigned the “paper response sheet” option in the e-assessment platform.
    • If a student requires a regular-print format to complete the entire assessment, an e-mail to EQAO must be sent to info@eqao.com to request this format.
    • If a student requires a large-print format to complete the entire assessment, an e-mail to EQAO must be sent to info@eqao.com to request this format. All responses from a large print format are to be transcribed into the e-assessment platform.
      • If a student requires a large-print paper sheet only to respond to the open-response question, which will then be transcribed into the e-assessment platform, print the sheet here. For this option, the student will be assigned the “online” format in the e-assessment platform.
    • At least 72 hours notice is required to obtain these printable formats.

Please Note: All responses from the printable format in large print must be transcribed into the e-assessment platform, including the language open-response questions, that cannot be scanned into the system.

  • An alternative online format with full descriptions of all mathematics graphics, for students with low vision who are able to access the assessment online. This format can also be used with the Braille or paper formats of the assessment.
  • An alternative online format without full descriptions of all mathematics graphics, for students who are able to access the assessment online and cannot complete the various types of questions in the assessment (e.g., drop-down or drag-and-drop questions). This format can also be used with the Braille or paper formats of the assessment.
  • MP3 audio with full descriptions of all mathematics graphics, for students with low vision, to be used with the Braille or paper formats of the assessment. This audio format contains separate MP3 files that are provided by EQAO for students who cannot access the audio descriptions in the online alternative format.
  • MP3 audio without full descriptions of all mathematics graphics, to be used with the paper format of the assessment. This audio format contains separate MP3 files that are provided by EQAO for students who cannot access the audio descriptions in the online alternative version.

Note: For the language component of the assessment, the audio with and without full descriptions of all graphics is the same.

Note: An e-mail to EQAO must be sent to info@eqao.com to request a format of the alternative version of the assessment to be sent electronically. One week is required to have the Braille format sent, and at least 72 hours notice is required to obtain the other formats.

IMPORTANT: To input student responses (to all questions, excluding open-response questions) into the e-assessment system, three options are available if a format of the alternative version is used:

  1. The student, if able, can respond to questions directly in the e-assessment system as the student completes the assessment.
  2. The scribe, if one is assigned to the student, can enter the student’s responses into the e-assessment system as the student completes the assessment.
  3. The teacher, if the student or scribe is not able to enter any responses into the e-assessment system as the student completes the assessment, must sign into the e-assessment system using the student’s sign in information, when the student has completed the session or stage, and transcribe the student’s responses directly into the system. It is important to transcribe the student’s responses exactly as the student has identified.

Note:

Regular Print

  • For the mathematics component, all responses must be entered into the e-assessment platform.
  • For the language component, all multiple-choice responses must be entered into the e-assessment platform. Responses that are handwritten on the assessment response sheets can either be transcribed into the platform or scanned and uploaded into the e-assessment system.

Large Print

  • For the mathematics component, all responses must be entered into the e-assessment platform.
  • For the language component, all responses must be entered into the e-assessment platform. Handwritten responses to the open-response questions must be transcribed into the e-assessment platform and cannot be scanned.

Refer to the section called Scanning Process for details.
